FIR ROCKING CHAIR
Child's Rocking Chair
18"x24"x27"h
This chair was made with fir joists from an abandoned building on Sixth St in New York City 1990.
It is 3/4 size of a Sam Maloof rocker. I and my wife along with a few friends from the Catholic Worker
became part of a battle for affordable housing in New York."At the time the army of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem…
Go and buy my field that is in Anathoth for the right of redemption by purchase is yours."(Jer 32)
We read it as hope for future in hard times. So in 1980's Manhatten's Lower East Side,
gentrification was pushing eastward toward the alphabet area. And there several bands of volunteers who have
a dream of affordable housing, make their way to Losaida area every Saturday to do sweat equity
in their chosen building. The dream is to keep each building in a land trust so
properties cannot be sold for profit. There are 10 or so buildings in this community land trust in Losaida.
Our group called Jeremiah's Field working on East Sixth Street, was creating homeless housing.
This five story building took 2 years to clear out and get ready for construction with
the help of many volunteers. After 10 years and $2 million dollars from the State of New York,
Jeremiah's Field became a reality and serves the homeless with permanent and transitional housing.
The fir rocker here was made over a year from this homesteaded building.
